Disney's Riviera Resort draws its inspiration from the charm and elegance of the French Riviera and the Italian coastline - two destinations that deeply influenced Walt Disney during his travels through Europe. Before we talk about the resort itself, I think it's important to consider where you plan to spend most of your vacation. One of the biggest mistakes people make when choosing a Disney resort is focusing only on the hotel instead of how it fits into their itinerary.

Riviera is a great fit if...

You're planning to spend more time at EPCOT and/or Hollywood Studios. It's also a great fit if your itinerary is balanced across all four parks and you simply want a beautiful resort to return to at the end of the day.
You love the Skyliner.
You plan to build in resort days or the resort itself is the destination to you.
Dining at nearby resorts or Disney Springs is part of your trip.

You may want to consider another resort if...

Most of your trip revolves around Magic Kingdom or Animal Kingdom.
If you're uncomfortable with heights or enclosed gondolas, keep in mind that Riviera's primary transportation to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios is the Disney Skyliner.
You prefer bold, immersive Disney theming throughout your resort.
You expect a traditional five-star luxury hotel simply because of the price tag.

The Architecture

One of the things I appreciate most about Riviera is that it doesn't feel like a themed resort - it feels like a place. Instead of recreating a single European landmark or village, the architecture was intentionally designed to evoke the feeling of a grand seaside hotel that has grown and evolved over generations.

The resort's central tower naturally draws your eye, while the surrounding wings vary in height and roofline, creating the impression that different sections were added over time rather than constructed all at once. Throughout the resort, you'll notice elegant mansard roofs, grand archways, stucco façades, decorative wrought iron, colorful awnings, and charming European-style street lamps. Courtyards, fountains, and thoughtfully landscaped gardens soften the architecture, making every pathway feel inviting.

The Artwork

One of Riviera's biggest strengths is that Disney storytelling is woven quietly throughout the resort. Rather than oversized character statues, you'll find more than forty original art pieces inspired by European masters and Disney films, making the spaces feel like an actual boutique hotel gallery.

The Music

One of the easiest details to overlook at Riviera is the music, yet it plays an important role in shaping the resort's atmosphere. Throughout the day, familiar Disney melodies are reimagined as elegant instrumental arrangements with French and Italian influences, creating a soundtrack that feels sophisticated rather than overtly themed. Like so much of Riviera's design, it's another thoughtful layer of storytelling—one that quietly reinforces the feeling that you've escaped to the European coast while still remaining unmistakably Disney.

The Mosaics

Even if you aren't staying at Riviera, the mosaics are worth a visit. Located in the breezeway leading to the Disney Skyliner, these two breathtaking works of art depict scenes from *Tangled* and *Peter Pan* in a style inspired by classic European mosaics. Each mural stands approximately 9 feet tall, stretches 63 feet in length, and is made from more than 500,000 hand-cut and hand-laid pieces of Italian glass and stone.

Because they're located along the path to the Skyliner, many guests simply walk through them on their way to the parks without stopping to appreciate the craftsmanship. Take a few extra minutes to slow down, look closely at the incredible detail, and notice how the colors change as the light shifts throughout the day. In fact, make a point to visit the mosaics **twice** - once in the morning and once in the evening. The changing natural light dramatically alters the colors and mood, making them feel like two different works of art. It's one of the most impressive—and most overlooked—pieces of Disney artwork at Walt Disney World.

Tailored Tip: Hunt for Hidden Mickeys

Look up as you arrive beneath the porte cochère, where the ceiling structure forms a giant Mickey silhouette. On your way to the Skyliner, don't miss Michael Darling's teddy bear in the Peter Pan mosaic, cleverly shaped like Mickey. You'll also find Hidden Mickeys (and friends) woven into the carpet patterns outside guest rooms and elevators, as well as in the decorative wrought iron railings and balconies throughout the resort. They're subtle, easy to miss, and a fun reminder that Disney storytelling is layered into even the smallest details.

The Dining

One of Riviera's greatest strengths is its dining. While many Disney resorts have one standout restaurant, Riviera offers an impressive lineup from morning to night. Whether you're grabbing a cappuccino and pastry at Le Petit Café, enjoying a surprisingly elevated quick-service meal at Primo Piatto, relaxing with lunch and a cocktail at Bar Riva, or celebrating a special evening at Topolino's Terrace, every dining location feels thoughtfully designed and consistently delivers quality. Even if you aren't staying at Riviera, its restaurants are well worth making the trip for - a testament to just how exceptional the dining scene has become.

Riviera's signature rooftop restaurant offers *two of the best dining experiences* at Walt Disney World. In the morning, **Breakfast à la Art** features Mickey and friends in charming artist-inspired outfits and is widely considered one of Disney's best character breakfasts.

In the evening, the atmosphere transforms into an elegant signature dining experience with French and Italian-inspired cuisine, panoramic views, and, on select nights, **a beautiful view of the EPCOT fireworks**.

Inspired by Walt Disney's travels through Europe, the library-like lounge features books, photographs, and artifacts celebrating his lifelong love of exploration, including nods to his 1935 European "Grand Tour." It's the kind of room that's easy to walk past but worth slowing down to appreciate, especially with a coffee from neighboring Le Petit Café.

Tailored Tip: One of my favorite things to do at any resort - but especially at Riviera if you have a balcony overlooking the lawn - is to wake up before everyone else, make a cup of coffee, and simply watch the resort come to life. There's something special about seeing excited families heading off to the parks for the day, watching the Disney Skyliner begin operating for the morning, and enjoying a few quiet moments before the energy of Walt Disney World takes over. It's become one of my favorite vacation traditions and another reminder that some of the best moments happen before you ever step into a park.

Life Around the Resort

One of Riviera's most underrated features is its footprint. While the resort's central tower makes it appear expansive, nearly everything is just a short walk away and under one roof. Whether you're heading to the pool, grabbing coffee at Le Petit Café, or catching the Skyliner, you rarely feel like you're trekking across the resort.

The Pools + Splash Pad

Riviera's pool area strikes a nice balance between family fun and quiet relaxation. The **main Riviera Pool** serves as the heart of the resort, featuring a zero-depth entry, plenty of seating, and a winding waterslide that wraps around a stone tower inspired by the lookout towers once found along the Italian coastline. Just steps away, younger children can cool off at **S'il Vous Play**, an interactive splash area inspired by European fountains and brought to life with playful *Fantasia*-themed water features.

If you're looking for a slower pace, head to the Beau Soleil Pool, Riviera's quieter leisure pool. Tucked away from the main activity, it's an ideal spot to read, relax, or enjoy a peaceful afternoon in the Florida sunshine. The Beau Soleil Pool is also home to two hot tubs, making it a great place to unwind after a long day in the parks. Whether you're traveling with young children or simply looking for a peaceful retreat, Riviera offers pool spaces that make it easy to enjoy a true resort day.

The Lawn

One of my favorite spaces at Riviera is the beautifully landscaped central lawn. Framed by palm trees, gardens, and fountains, it serves as the heart of the resort and is a place where families naturally gather to relax between park visits. Throughout the day, you'll often find guests enjoying complimentary lawn games like giant chess, jumbo Connect 4, cornhole, bocce ball, and checkers. Cast Members regularly host games and activities in the mornings, creating a fun, laid-back atmosphere without making the space feel crowded or overwhelming.

One of the unexpected joys of spending time on the lawn is that Disney characters will occasionally stroll through the area, stopping to wave, interact, and chat with guests. These aren't scheduled character meet-and-greets, but rather spontaneous moments that add a little extra Disney magic to an already relaxing afternoon. Whether you're joining a game, watching your kids run around, or simply enjoying a coffee on a nearby bench, the lawn perfectly captures Riviera's slower, more leisurely pace.

In the evenings, the resort comes alive with campfires, Movies Under the Stars, trivia, and seasonal events that make it easy to extend the fun long after you've left the parks.

One of Riviera's greatest advantages is how easy it is to explore beyond the resort itself. Start with a leisurely walk around Barefoot Bay, where beautifully landscaped pathways, waterfront views, and neighboring resorts make for a peaceful morning or evening stroll.

Just a short walk away, Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort offers even more to discover. Grab a drink at Banana Cabana, lunch at Sebastian’s Bistro, browse the gift shop, or let little ones burn off some energy at the playground before heading back to Riviera.

Even if you don't have plans to visit the parks, don't overlook the Disney Skyliner. Hop aboard simply for the ride and explore nearby resorts like Disney's Pop Century Resort and Disney's Art of Animation Resort. One of my favorite ways to spend an afternoon is taking the Skyliner to EPCOT's International Gateway - not to enter the park, but to stroll over to Disney's BoardWalk, Disney's Yacht Club Resort, and Disney's Beach Club Resort. It's one of the most beautiful areas at Walt Disney World, filled with waterfront walking paths, shops, restaurants, and places to sit and enjoy the atmosphere. It's a reminder that some of the best Disney experiences happen outside the parks.

Quiet Corners

One of the things I love most about Riviera is that it's filled with peaceful places to pause. Whether you're looking to enjoy your morning coffee, read a book, or simply take a break from the excitement of the parks, you'll never have to look far.

My favorite spot is Voyageurs' Lounge, a cozy library-inspired space just off the lobby where you can settle in with a coffee from Le Petit Café and enjoy the quiet surroundings. Just outside, the lobby balconies overlook the palm tree-lined lawn and are perfect for people-watching or enjoying a few moments of fresh air.

For a quieter outdoor escape, take a seat along the waterfront at Barefoot Bay, relax on one of the lawn benches, or wander over to the small beach area, where you'll often find guests enjoying the peaceful views. If you're looking to unwind after a busy park day, the Beau Soleil Pool and its two hot tubs offer a calm retreat away from the energy of the main pool.

These are the places that make Riviera feel less like a theme park hotel and more like a European resort. They invite you to slow down and remember that some of the best moments of your vacation don't require a Lightning Lane or a park ticket.

The Rooms

Tower Studio

The Tower Studios are some of the smallest accommodations at Walt Disney World, sleeping up to two adults in approximately 255 square feet. Every inch of the room has been thoughtfully designed, with a queen Murphy bed that folds into the wall during the day, a surprisingly spacious bathroom, a small balcony, and clever built-in storage solutions.

While I appreciate the ingenuity behind the design, this is probably the one room category I would personally skip. The Tower Studio can work well if your goal is simply to have a place to sleep while spending all day in the parks, for solo travelers, couples, or DVC members who want to maximize their points by booking Riviera's lowest-cost room category. But if you're hoping to enjoy the resort itself - as I think Riviera is best experienced - the limited living space can begin to feel restrictive after a few days.

Deluxe Studio

Sleeps 5 + 1 infant (under 3)

These rooms feature a queen bed, a queen Murphy bed, and a pull-down bed more suitable for a child. A kitchenette with a microwave, mini refrigerator, coffee maker, and toaster makes quick breakfasts and late-night snacks easy, while the room still feels open, bright, and thoughtfully designed. The European-inspired finishes, Disney artwork, and ample storage make it feel more refined than a typical hotel room.

One - Bedroom Villa

Sleeps 5 + 1 infant (under 3)

If your budget allows, this is where Riviera really begins to shine.

The One-Bedroom Villas feel less like hotel rooms and more like upscale vacation homes. With a full kitchen, separate bedroom, spacious living room, private balcony, washer and dryer, and plenty of room to spread out, they completely change the pace of your vacation. Parents can put young children to bed while still enjoying the living room, prepare simple breakfasts before heading to the parks, and easily wash swimsuits or a week's worth of clothes without leaving the room.

Two - Bedroom Villa

Dedicated: Sleeps 9 + 1 infant (under 3)

Lock-off: Sleeps 10 + 1 infant (under 3)

Riviera offers two types of two-bedroom accommodations. The Dedicated Two-Bedroom Villa sleeps up to 9 guests (plus one infant under age 3 in a crib) and features two true bedrooms connected by a shared living space. The Two-Bedroom Lock-Off Villa sleeps up to 10 guests (plus one infant) by combining a One-Bedroom Villa with an adjoining Deluxe Studio. The lock-off configuration provides a second private entrance, making it an excellent option for larger families, grandparents, or groups traveling together who appreciate a little extra flexibility and privacy.

The Grand Villa

Sleeps 12 + 1 infant (under 3)

At the top of Riviera's accommodations is The Grand Villa, an expansive three-bedroom residence that sleeps up to 12 guests. Designed for multi-generational vacations, family reunions, or special celebrations, it features a full chef's kitchen, large dining and living areas, three full bathrooms, a private balcony, and enough space for everyone to gather comfortably under one roof. While it's far beyond what most guests need, it's one of the most impressive accommodations anywhere at Walt Disney World.

The Views

Riviera offers two primary view categories: Resort View and Preferred View.

Resort View rooms may overlook the parking area, landscaping, or other areas of the resort. Preferred View rooms offer views of the lawn + gardens, pools, courtyard, Barefoot Bay, and/or skyliner. While Preferred View can be a nice upgrade if you plan to spend a lot of time on your balcony, I don't think it's essential.

***Tailored Tip:*** *On one of our stays, we booked a two-bedroom* ***Resort View*** room overlooking the parking area and road, so I wasn't expecting much from the view. What I didn't realize until evening was that we also had a partial view toward EPCOT. Once the sun went down, we could see Spaceship Earth glowing in the distance and had a wonderful view of the nighttime fireworks from our balcony. We opened a bottle of champagne, sat outside, and watched the show while the kids slept. It was such an unexpected surprise—and one of my favorite memories from that stay.

The Transportation

The Skyliner

The Disney Skyliner is Riviera's signature mode of transportation and one of the main reasons many guests choose to stay here. The gondola system provides transportation to **EPCOT's International Gateway** and **Disney's Hollywood Studios**. Even if you're not planning to visit the parks, the Skyliner is a fun way to explore nearby resorts or spend an afternoon strolling Disney's BoardWalk, Yacht Club, and Beach Club Resorts.

It's worth noting that the Skyliner is weather dependent. During periods of lightning, high winds, or severe weather, service may be temporarily suspended. Disney also schedules routine maintenance, typically for about a week in late January. If the Skyliner isn't operating for any reason, Disney buses become Riviera's primary mode of transportation.

My Thoughts on the Skyliner
One of the biggest reasons my family continues to return to Riviera is the Disney Skyliner. We genuinely love it. For us, it's more than just transportation—it's become part of the vacation.
There's something relaxing about gliding above Walt Disney World, watching the resorts and waterways pass below, and spotting the colorful Disney character wraps on the gondolas as they arrive at the station. It almost feels like an attraction in its own right.
As parents of young children, one feature we especially appreciate is that you don't have to fold your stroller before boarding (unless you're using an oversized stroller). You simply roll it into the gondola with your child still comfortably seated. At the end of a long park day, not having to wake a sleeping toddler or unload the stroller makes a surprisingly big difference.
That said, the Skyliner isn't for everyone. If you have a fear of heights, experience claustrophobia, or simply prefer more traditional forms of transportation, the enclosed gondolas may not be your favorite way to travel. While Disney buses are always available when the Skyliner is closed for weather or scheduled maintenance, guests staying at Riviera should know that the Skyliner is intended to be the primary transportation to EPCOT and Disney's Hollywood Studios.

The Bus

Disney buses provide complimentary transportation to Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Disney Springs, and the Disney water parks, as well as serving all destinations whenever the Skyliner is unavailable. Riviera's bus stop is one of the nicer ones on property, with a covered waiting area, benches, and digital boards displaying estimated arrival times for each bus, making it easy to know when your next ride is approaching.

Tailored Tip: Riviera is just a short, direct bus ride from Disney Springs, making it one of my favorite resorts for guests who plan to dine, shop, or spend multiple evenings there during their vacation.

Minnie Van by Lyft

If convenience is your top priority, Minnie Van service through the Lyft app is another excellent option. Driven by Disney Cast Members, Minnie Vans offer direct transportation anywhere on Walt Disney World property and can even use the bus loop at Magic Kingdom, saving you the walk or monorail transfer required from the Transportation and Ticket Center. While this is a paid service, it's a great option for early dining reservations, airport transfers, or families traveling with young children.

Self-Parking + Valet

Complimentary standard self-parking is included for all registered overnight guests staying at Disney's Riviera Resort, including Disney Vacation Club members. If you prefer, valet parking is also available for an additional nightly fee.

If you're visiting Riviera for a dining reservation, complimentary self-parking is typically available during your reservation. You will need to show the security gate your confirmed dining reservation. Keep in mind that day guests are generally limited to approximately three hours and parking is subject to availability.

One important thing to know: Disney does not allow guests to use Riviera as free theme park parking. You cannot leave your vehicle at the resort while taking the Skyliner or Disney transportation to the parks for the day.

For guests driving an electric vehicle, Riviera also offers two EV charging stations in the general parking area on a first-come, first-served basis.

A Few Things to Consider -

The theming is more understated than immersive.

One of Riviera's biggest strengths for some guests can also be a drawback for others. Unlike Disney's Polynesian Village Resort or Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, Riviera doesn't transport you to another world in quite the same way. Those resorts showcase some of Disney Imagineering's most immersive storytelling, where every pathway, sound, and architectural detail makes you feel as though you've stepped into a completely different place.

Riviera takes a different approach. Having visited the French Riviera and stayed in several hotels along the coast, I was surprised by how authentic Riviera feels within the Disney bubble. Rather than creating a romanticized or exaggerated version of Europe, Disney Imagineering chose to recreate the atmosphere of the grand seaside hotels that still exist along the French and Italian Riviera today. As a result, Riviera doesn't immediately feel like an attraction or an immersive themed experience—and I think that was entirely intentional. It feels like a beautiful European hotel first, with Disney storytelling thoughtfully layered throughout. For some guests, that understated approach may feel less "Disney." For others, it's exactly what makes Riviera feel so unique.

If you're someone who loves feeling completely immersed in a distinctly Disney environment, Riviera may feel a little restrained. But if you appreciate a quieter, more refined atmosphere with Disney magic layered in rather than front and center, that understated approach is exactly what makes Riviera so appealing.

You're paying a Deluxe price tag.

Disney's Riviera Resort is one of Walt Disney World's Deluxe Resorts, and while it's not always the most expensive hotel on property, it's undeniably a significant investment. Depending on your travel dates, rates can rival - or even exceed - some true luxury resorts.

When I compare Riviera to an off-property luxury resort, I don't think the room alone tells the whole story. A resort like Four Seasons Orlando offers a more traditionally luxurious experience in terms of service and amenities. Riviera's value comes from offering an elevated resort experience within the Disney bubble - where you're also paying for effortless access to the parks, Disney transportation, and the feeling that the vacation doesn't end when you leave the park gates.

The rooms aren't quite as pristine as they once were.

When Disney's Riviera Resort first opened in late 2019, everything was expectedly fresh and polished. I first stayed here in February 2023, and one of the things that stood out most was how new the rooms still felt. Since then, I've returned several more times, and while the rooms remain beautiful and thoughtfully designed, I've started to notice the normal signs of a well-loved resort—small scuffs, worn furniture edges, and other cosmetic wear. To be honest, this changed my experience on my most recent stay. At Riviera's price point, I found myself expecting the rooms to feel a little more polished. It was enough that I began looking at other accommodations for my future Disney trips. None of it detracted from Riviera's location or overall charm, but if you're expecting the flawless feel of a newly opened luxury hotel, it's worth setting realistic expectations.

This is another reason I personally prefer renting DVC points. At Disney's standard cash rates, the wear felt harder to overlook. At DVC rental prices, I still think Riviera offers excellent value.

Final Thoughts -

I've stayed at the Riviera Resort several times now, and despite a few criticisms - most notably the rising room rates and some noticeable wear in the accommodations - I continue to come back. For my family, it's the combination of the Skyliner, outstanding dining, thoughtful design, and slower pace that keeps us returning.
Would I pay Disney's standard cash rates? Probably not. I'd rent DVC points every time.
Would I recommend Riviera? Absolutely - but only to the right traveler and the right kind of Disney trip.
